AMP – How to turn your website into an AMP

Last time I showed you how to link your google analytics account to your wordpress website today we are going to talk about AMP.

What is an AMP

AMP Stands for ‘’accelerated mobile pages’’

Think of it like this;

When you lose weight, you lose hard fat that surrounds your organs like liver, kidneys and then you will start to lose soft fat like waistline and thigh fat.

The fat loss from around the organs makes you leaner and stronger.

In the same way, AMP pages are stripped-down  HTML, stripped down CSS and no Javascript at all.

AMP Pages focus on two important things; Readability and Speed. They are very light weight.

HyperText Markup Language (HTML), Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), and JavaScript are the languages that make up webpages.

Why did google, twitter and all these giant companies birth this project?

AMP is an open source project that was designed to make really fast mobile pages.

The relationship between AMP and SEO

Whenever you visit a website that takes a very long time to load, do you always stick around until it loads or do you abandon the nonsense?

And If you’re like me, you’ll definitely abandon the nonsense.

That is very bad because Google wants to make its users happy.

When you abandon a website, google knows that you didn’t like the website.

And when many people abandon a website, google penalises the website owner.

When Google users are happy, they will always stay on and use google.

And if they use google, google will always make money because more advertisers will pay google to be able to advertise on their platform.

Do you get the gist of what I'm saying?

Good!

Now, let me warn you that there are some cons to installing AMP on your website.

Stop!

After you have read it, please decide for yourself whether you’re going to implement AMP or not.

If you ask my opinion on this issue I will tell you to implement AMP for your website.

How to Configure AMP on your WordPress website.

Step 1. Install and activate the AMP Plugin for WP by Ahmed Kaludi

Step 2: Go to your wordpress dashboard and click on ‘’AMP’’

Step 3: Once you’re on the ‘’setup’’ page. You can now begin the configuration process.

Select your blog theme and click next

Make sure to turn off the button that says ‘’ Redirect Mobile Visitors to AMP’’

You don’t want to redirect all your mobile visitors to AMP.

I wouldn't advise a redirect for all mobile users. I would leave it to Google to direct visitors arriving through its search engine to be sent to the AMP pages.

If AMP is going to a must, browsers will implement it automatically.

Come to think of it, if you're serving content to mobile devices, it might be irresponsible to serve AMP pages to people using older Windows Phone or Blackberry devices whose browsers may not even properly support AMP.

Congratulations! You have successfully Installed AMP.
